Budapest in August
The hot summer season continues into August in what's always been a great month for major happenings for locals and visitors alike; and this year promises to be no different with big name concerts and major sporting events.
The month rockets off to a great start on August 1st with Whitesnake, the legendary hair guitar band, performing at the Petofi Csarnok. The band, fronted by music veteran David Coverdale, makes their first visit to Budapest after a long break.
Continuing in the music scene, Hungary's biggest music festival, the Sziget Festival, takes place in August from the 9th to the 16th. Taking to the stage includes 200 international stars and 500 Hungarian bands along with numerous stand-up comedians and humorists, dancers and acrobats. All of the events take place on Hajogyári (Obudai) Sziget right in the middle of Budapest.
Pop legends ??? Toto ??? perform at the Petofi Csarnok on the 19th. It's been a long time since the band performed in Hungary, but it promises to be a great concert with the group promoting their new album ??? Falling in Between. Their performance in Budapest is part of their pan-European tour.
As part of his "Farewell Tour", Luciano Pavarotti, without doubt one of the greatest tenors of all time, visits Budapest to perform at the Puskás Ferenc Stadion on the 19th. Since 2005 the singer has been visiting some of his favourite cities to grace audiences with a final appearance before bowing out for good from his illustrious career. His tour is due to finish at the end of this year.
The famous and alternative Budapest Parade takes place on August 26th, with several hundred DJs and some big name performing artists thrilling the crowds on huge floats as they make their way along Budapest's Champs Elysées ??? Andrassy Street - to Heroes' Square.
Changing scenes, motorsports and the month of August can mean only one thing ??? Formula 1. Alonso, Schumacher, Raikkonen and co. will be at the Hungaroring from August 3rd to August 6th in what promises to be a thrilling race as the top two battle it out for supremacy. The racing track lies in a pretty little valley about 19km from the capital. The stands are located on the slopes so fans are promised excellent views and, hopefully, a thrilling race.
August 20th sees Hungarians remember their founder ??? St. Stephen, the first King of Hungary. As well as a day full of incredible, death-defying air and water stunts, the city holds one of the most spectacular firework displays to be found anywhere, down by the river.
Master craftsmen show off their skills and trades in Budapest's historic castle area from the 17th to the 20th. Visitors can glimpse folk art and craft work, and try their hands out at wood carving, pottery and baking. Visitors, desirous to get a taste of Hungary proper, should put this festival (Mestersegek Unnepe) at the forefront of their list of things to do.
Towards the end of the month on August 26th, Solymar ??? located just outside Budapest ??? hosts a gospel festival featuring artists from abroad and Hungary. Foreign and popular Hungarian Christian artists are expected to take to the stage in what should be a spiritual, if not eye-opening, event.
Budapest's Palace of Arts plays host to Central Europe's first ever Swing festival between August 26th and 28th. Audiences can experience the sounds of Hungarian, Czech, Polish and Slovakian musicians. The festival is an attempt to establish the Swing scene as a tradition in the region.
Wrapping up the month, the Jewish Summer Festival takes centre stage on August 26th and continues through to September 4th. All events take place at the beautiful grand Synagogue on Dohany Street. Performances include classical and light music, film, photography and stage, each designed to introduce audiences to Jewish traditions and culture.
August is also a popular month for wine festivals and other wine tasting events which you can find dotted around the capital, and where you can taste some rather unique Hungarian wines. The country has a large variety of grapes that are hard to find elsewhere and no less than 28 individual wine regions.
