Buda Castle

This is the real downtown of Buda, more commonly known as the Castle. It is worthwhile to take a stroll down the narrow streets, among the medieval monuments and the 17th-18th century houses that have been renovated after WWII and enjoy the uncomparable view of Pest.In the Castle District are a number of outstanding buildings, such as of the Matthias Church (Mátyás Templom); the Fishermen's Bastion (Halászbástya), the office of the President of the Republic, the Alexander Palace (Sándor Palota), in front of which at noon each day the changing of the guards takes place; the Hungarian National Gallery (Magyar Nemzeti Galéria) and of course, the Buda Palace which gives home to numerous national art collections. Beneath the Castle District is an extensive cave - and cellar-system that served as a hospital and storage during WWII and today is a real tourist attraction. To reach or to leave the Castle, it is best to try out the Funicular (Sikló)!
