Built in 1896, the Museum of Applied Arts not only contains one of Budapest's most interesting art collections, but is also among its most impressive buildings. The breath-taking exterior includes colourful tiled towers, stained-glass domes and mosaic floral motifs ??? all typical features of secessionist architecture, the most popular building style during Budapest's heyday in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. As a result, the museum itself is just as much a work of art as the artefacts it contains. At present there is no permanent exhibition though temporary exhibits regularly showcase objects from a wide variety of sources. Recent exhibitions have included historic clocks and fashions, along with art nouveau pieces and traditional Hungarian handicrafts. The museum also features a small shop and café.
