Under the royal castle you will find a more than 10 km long cave system. The caves were created by the eruption of hot (thermal) water springs in the upper chalk layers. Such caves are a rarity throughout the world and should be definitely visited, at least if you are a cave addict. After the invasion of the Tatars, Hungarian king Béla IV started the erection of the Buda castle, but from archaeological findings we now know, that there have been people living in these caves even before that time, probably finding these caves while they were drilling for water. The caves have always been important shelters in case of occupations and firestorms. According to several descriptions the defenders of the castle used to counterattack through openings drilled from these caves, and it has been said that some of the less attractive harem ladies of the Turkish Pashas residing in the castle, have found their end in these caves. The castle cave is not open to public, but the Buda Castle Labyrinth is.
